Executive Summary

Working with P&G under confidentiality we redesigned a consumer packaged good. We received an IP award from P&G.

We focused on ethnographic research in order to re-imagine the user journey. We conducted multiple rounds of prototyping and testing. We also conducted competitor and market research.

Executive summary of final designs

Through EDI's partnership with Procter & Gamble, we (a team of three) took on a client project, based on real industry needs.

Throughout our project we navigated the complete design process, starting with research, moving to synthesis, prototyping, testing and repeating. While we focused more on design and innovation we also considered the needs of P&G in marketing, brand image and sales.

Due to IP concerns and an NDA agreement the critical details of the product and it's landscape cannot be shared.

Our team received an IP award after Procter and Gamble acquired the rights to our work.

Research and synthesis

From day one we dove right into our research. Soon after receiving our design brief, requirements and resources we conducted in-home visits, as well as secondary research to understand the product landscape, habits, aspirations and tensions of our users. We developed journey maps, tensions, insights and frameworks to organize our findings and aid our ideation for potential solutions.

How might we bring delight to a mundane daily activity?

Ideate and prototype

Using our findings, and design research tools we began brainstorming solutions in the product sector but also in the service sector to ideate on new ways to solve our consumers tensions. Through various brainstorming sessions we developed a broad and diverse line of solutions that was presented and prototyped using various methods. Our prototypes varied from foam core, matte board, laser cut paper and acrylic, and 3D printing various materials. Technical analysis was also conducted for all our prototypes.

Iterate iterate iterate

We used these prototypes to do user testing through On-Site Visits.

Using our new findings we created new insights, frameworks etc. and re-ideated. We continued this process of Research - Ideation - Prototyping three times to really understand our users, their needs, aspirations and how they interact with our devices. We developed around 20-30 prototypes and researched 14 people through In-Home and On-Site Visits.

Final solutions

We presented a finalized product, with recommendations in retail, manufacturing and materials. We also presented solutions outside our project scope, in opportunity areas where we found significant insights regarding consumer behavior. We also delivered our finalized research, including journey maps, personas, insights and frameworks.

We were given an IP award from Procter and Gamble for the totality of our work.
