 Lumihealth 4.0

Executive summary

For this major release I lead three workstreams

  1. A simplification of our core game mechanics to address common pain points

  2. The development of a “Phone Only” version of the app, allowing users without Apple Watch to join for the first time in Lumihealth history

  3. A recalibration and increase of our incentives

We launched this release early 2025

Simplification

Based on internal and external feedback we decided to revisit and simplify a number of our core game mechanics to provide a clear and quickly understandable experience. I lead the audit of this effort and the design improvements for the Ring and core game

3.0 Experience

Core game

❌ Users only had to complete a % of their challenges to win the week and then could go into “bonus zone”, leading to confusion about whether they were done or not

Lumi Ring

❌ Rewards were spread out among a number of milestones, making it less exciting. The previous number of milestones was part of a deprecated mechanic

❌ Lumi Ring was only available in Quests, making for a bifurcated experience and an empty feeling “out of Quest” experience

❌ Users had to reach the milestone to find out how much was hidden within and to see the next milestone

Challenges

❌ Each challenge has a weekly goal reflected on the card, drawing users attention away from the Ring and to weekly goals

❌ Some challenges had overachieving mechanics, while others did not. We simplified to one challenge type that worked the same way

❌ Some challenges had bonus points, others bonus coins and some had neither. We simplified by removing bonuses from challenges

4.0 Simplifications

Core game

✅ Complete your challenges to win the week i.e. close the ring

✅ Once the ring is closed, you’re done for the week

Lumi Ring

✅ Less milestones, more rewards

✅ Always available including in “out of Quest” state

✅ Milestone amounts discoverable on tap and all milestones visible from the start

Challenges

✅ Remove weekly goals from cards, making them more of a daily to-do list

✅ Unify over achieving mechanics and challenge types

✅ Remove bonus points or coins

Phone Only program

  • Lumihealth is designed as a product that integrates seamlessly with Apple Watch

  • In order to extend this product to a broader user base we investigated what would need to change in the experience to work without Apple Watch

  • I lead this investigation as a PM, working with our internal stakeholders and our HPB partners to define and execute on this vision

  • As UX Lead I worked with our UI and Content Design teams to make the necessary adjustments to touchpoints like onboarding, Quest enrollment, Quest curriculum, new challenge types and adaptations to our clinical Quests so that the same health outcomes can be available to users without Apple Watch

How it works

🙅🏻‍♀️⌚️ Users without a Watch can now join the same Lumihealth app as their Watch wearing friends

✅ They can join a number of phone compatible Quests that don’t require Watch capabilities and are instead reliant on phone sensors and self reporting (like journalling)

🔒 Watch only Quests appear locked, giving these users a chance to consider upgrading to the full experience with a Watch

📲 Their phone sensors can track a number of metrics like steps, flights, calories burned and more

😅 Active users can also track their Move Ring (as opposed to the three Rings on the Watch)

🏃‍♀️ A new challenge type helps users log runs and walks (in place of workouts tracked using the Watch)

💸 These users can earn the same rewards by completing their respective Quests

Incentives

  • Our incentives structure is always evolving to optimize for engagement and health outcomes

  • As part of this release I lead an incentives simplification and recalibration in an attempt to improve comprehension and dial in how incentives lead to outcomes

  • As a PM I worked to define this new structure in partnership with our internal stakeholders as well as our HPB partners
